“Winemaking, for us, is a natural extension of farming.”

I had the pleasure of working for Jill and Steve Matthiasson in Napa before moving to Atlanta several years ago, and I can say without a doubt—this sentiment couldn’t be more true.

Since their first vintage in 2003, the Matthiassons have been refining a signature style: clean wines with moderate alcohol, inherent freshness, and a clear intent to complement food. Whether opened young or after a decade of aging, their wines exude balance, complexity, and a brightness at the core—made possible by unwavering dedication and meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard long before a grape ever enters the cellar.

But I’d argue that most things Jill and Steve do is a natural extension of farming.  It’s simply who they are, farmers first—and it shows in every aspect of their work:

The liveliness of their farms – full of energy, color, and biodiversity – as evidence of their pioneering dedication to and advocacy of regenerative organic farming.  The cultivation of peach and citrus orchards from which they make jam for the Wine Club.  Their involvement as mentors in the 280 Project, an initiative committed to increasing equity and diversity in viticulture and winemaking.  And, the choice to use a collection of pruning shears on the wine labels as a subtle ode to both of their agricultural backgrounds.

It’s nice to know that what's in your glass is a product of quality and integrity—but even better to know it was crafted by truly great people, with a depth and complexity that only comes from farming first.

2023 LINDA VISTA CHARDONNAY

Harvested over the course of several weeks in pursuit of balance, this Chardonnay showcases the best qualities the varietal has to offer.  Earlier picks ensure bright, zesty acidity while extra hang time on the vines lends itself to rich notes of peaches and honey.  Enjoy on a lazy, summer evening with oysters or roasted chicken.

2024 ROSÉ

I have a number of industry friends back in California who only purchased this wine by the case – and I wouldn’t discourage anyone else from doing the same.  A beautiful, Provencal-style Rose, this wine is just as fun as it is impressive.  An excellent addition to an afternoon BBQ or a reliable, sure-fire gift.

2022 SCHIOPPETTINO

In 2010, the Matthiassons planted two rows of this rare, ancient Fruilian variety at the ‘Home Vineyard’ – also known as their backyard.  With only a handful of other plantings in the US, this transparent and delicate grape embodies both finesse and a distinct sense of place.  Bright red fruit and a unique peppery aroma make Schioppettino a delightful match for cheese and charcuterie, and pairs even better with those who will truly appreciate your generosity in opening this bottle.

No. 7 VERMOUTH

The options are endless with this complex, off-dry Vermouth.  Infusions of homegrown fruits, spices and herbs bring levity to cherry cola notes and a slightly bitter finish.  Try it as an aperitif, in a spritz, with dessert, or even in place of standard vermouth in your favorite cocktail. Or, do as the Matthiassons and enjoy it ‘neat’ while prepping for a lovely evening around the dinner table.
